We are seeking a seasoned Fund Equity Controller with significant private equity fund accounting and financial reporting experience. The role will primarily support private equity fund operations, with additional exposure to internally managed hedge funds and separately managed accounts.
The ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge of complex fund structures, partnership economics, investor allocations, capital activity, and distribution waterfalls. Responsibilities will span financial reporting, NAV oversight, investment valuations, carried interest, management and incentive fees, regulatory reporting, and coordination of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close activities.
This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented accounting professional who can operate independently, manage multiple priorities, and work effectively with senior management, fund administrators, auditors, and internal business partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and review private equity fund accounting, financial reporting, and monthly NAV packages prepared by external administrators.
- Coordinate annual audits, review financial statements, validate supporting schedules, and ensure timely completion of audit requirements.
- Review investment accounting and valuation support, including cost basis, realized and unrealized gains and losses, portfolio company activity, and fund-level consolidation.
- Manage capital calls, distributions, investor commitments, unfunded balances, cash movements, and related investor communications in accordance with partnership agreements.
- Review fund expenses, validate invoices, and coordinate payment processing.
- Prepare and review investor allocations, management fees, fee offsets, incentive fees, and carried interest calculations.
- Develop and validate distribution waterfall models covering return of capital, preferred returns, hurdle rates, GP catch-up, carried interest splits, and clawback provisions under whole-fund and deal-by-deal structures.
- Maintain and reconcile LP and GP capital accounts, including contributions, distributions, P&L allocations, closing equalizations, and investor transfers.
- Interpret partnership agreements, offering documents, and side letters across LP/GP, master-feeder, parallel fund, co-investment, and SPV structures.
- Perform daily cash and position reconciliations and prepare daily, weekly, and month-end gross and net estimates.
- Review quarterly regulatory filings, including Form PF and AIFMD.
- Partner with Investor Relations, Middle Office, Tax, Legal, external administrators, and auditors to meet reporting deadlines.
- Establish and maintain accounting procedures, operational documentation, and internal controls.
- Identify and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and workflow efficiencies.
- Support additional projects and special initiatives as needed.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of relevant experience in fund accounting or fund controllership, with substantial hands-on private equity fund experience required.
- Additional hedge fund accounting experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of private equity fund structures, LP/GP economics, capital commitments, capital calls and distributions, investor allocations, capital accounts, and management fee calculations.
- Demonstrated expertise in interpreting partnership agreements and applying complex distribution waterfall provisions, including preferred returns, hurdle rates, GP catch-up, carried interest, and clawbacks.
- Familiarity with multiple investment products and financial instruments, including equities, fixed income, swaps, options, and futures.
- Experience with monthly and quarterly fund closes, NAV reviews, financial statements, and external audits.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly advanced Excel proficiency.
- Experience with Geneva is a plus.
- CPA designation preferred, but not required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact directly with external clients and senior management.
- Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, accountability, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, deadline-driven environment.
